New Medicare Cards to be Issued

            New Medicare Cards are coming....

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019.

A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on the new Medicare cards for all Medicare transactions including billing, eligibility status, and claim status. The new MBI is 11 characters in length and made up of only numbers and uppercase letters (no special characters). The new Medicare cards will be issued to all beneficiaries no earlier than April 2018. Your practice should start preparing for any internal policy or revenue cycle impacts that these changes may cause.

CMS recognizes that physician office practices may need to update their practice management systems to accept the new MBI. The PracticeAdmin development team is currently reviewing if any changes are needed in Billing Manager to accept the new MBI, currently, we do not anticipate any changes will need to be made. As usual, if any updates are needed, you will receive all product upgrades as part of your monthly subscription fee.
